A carbon footprint is a measure of the result our activities have on the environment, and in particular climate change. The amount of greenhouse gases produced in our day-to-day lives through burning fossil fuels for electricity, heating and transportation has a negative effect on the environment and leads to global warming.
What can I do to reduce this?
Making small changes to the way in which you use energy can not only make a dramatic difference to the environment but it can also reduce your energy costs by thousands of pounds. Installing a Voltis voltage optimsation unit will not only help you lower your energy usage it will also assist in reducing your carbon emissions by up to 20%, ensuring you are doing your bit for the environment.
Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC Scheme)
The CRC scheme is designed to drive organisations to reduce their carbon emissions to help the Government achieve the reduction targets it has committed to. The scheme is levy based; put simply the more electricity you consume which is converted into tonnes of carbon emissions, the higher the annual charge.
There are two levels to the scheme:
1. If your organisation's annual electricity consumption is above 600mWh (megawatt-hours) based on your 2008 figures then you will be a full participant in the scheme.
2. If your organisation and or its subsidiaries have at least one half-hourly electricity meter (HHM) settled on the half-hourly market then you will only need to provide information disclosure on your electricity consumption.

Participants will be required, at the end of each tax year, to purchase carbon allowances based on the total actual electricity consumption you have made during that year, initially at £12 per tonne, but subsequently it is proposed this levy will fluctuate.
There will also be an annual league table published which will be used as a reputational driver within the scheme on the basis organisations will want to be seen to be at the top of the league table to demonstrate their commitment to reducing their carbon footprint and impact on the environment.
Climate Change Levy
In addition to the CRC Scheme, the Climate Change Levy (CCL) has been in place since 2001 and it is a levy on every kilo watt hour of electricity (kWh) you consume. It is estimated that these two schemes can add almost 15% to your electricity consumption costs.
Predictions are for energy costs to continue to rise in real terms in the future.
Climate Change Act 2008
This act sets a legally binding target on EU member states to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 26% by 2010. By installing a Voltis unit you can not only save your organisation money but you will also significantly reduce your Carbon Footprint and reduce CO2 emissions in the order of 25%.
